was the US Air Force’s premier
tactical strike aircraft in the 1970s
and 80s. Its deployment in the
European theater was particularly
notable, with two wings in the UK
at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Upper Heyford.
The example in this photograph served with
Lakenheath’s 48th Tactical Fighter Wing before
it re-equipped with the F-111’s ultimate
successor, the F-15E Strike Eagle.
This image was taken during Exercise ‘Quick
Force 93’, which involved a number of types
operating from their home bases to conduct
a series of co-ordinated strike missions in the
western US.
A total of 106 F-111Fs were produced for the
USAF. The last examples were retired by the
27th Fighter Wing at Cannon AFB, New Mexico,
in 1996 and flown to Davis-Monthan AFB,
Arizona, for storage.
