you can move them around on the
model without damaging them.
As required by law in a number
of countries, the decal sheet lacks
the swastikas for the fin. These were
sourced from an Ikarus aftermarket
decal sheet (72006), which
contains various styles and sizes.
Once all the decals were in place,
I turned to the undercarriage.
Photo-etch parts from the Eduard
set replaced the landing gear
covers, and I also added brake
lines from stretched sprue.
The main wheels are slightly
weighted, always a nice feature if
done well, as Airfix have done.Final touches included adding
the antennas and the open
canopy hood, before a little bit
of weathering. I used thinned
Windsor & Newton artists’ oils
before adding a layer of Matt
Cote to seal everything in.CONCLUSION
Airfix’ new kit has all the benefits of a
modern tooling, with crisp surfaces,
good interior detail, and correctly-
rendered open wheel bays. In my opinion, it is the best Me-262 on the
market, outclassing all other offerings
in this scale in terms of
accuracy and
value for
money.
Panel lines are
prominent, as seen on other Airfix
kits, but can be subdued with an
additional layer of surface primer.
The fit issues around the wing/
engine joint, which affect many
262 kits, can easily be rectified with
just a little tender love and care.
The Eduard photo-etch set adds
finesse to the model, although there
are plenty of tiny interior parts thatwon’t ever be seen if fitted. In the
end, I only used the most visible
items, such as the instrument
panel, seatbelts, cockpit backplate,
antennas, and the landing gear doors.
Eduard also provides an armoured
headrest in their set, a vital addition
to replace the one thing Airfix missed.
I really enjoyed building
this kit and have already added
another one to my stash!
