he North American FJ-1 Fury was
the US Navy’s first jet fighter, but
due to its limited performance, only
30 were built before the Nav y moved on
to other, more promising designs. At the
time, North American was also working
on the XF-86, which was based on the FJ-1.
The Air Force recognized the performance
limitations of the FJ-1 straight wing design
and encouraged North American to consider
a swept wing configuration, based on
data that was becoming available from
captured WWII German research. Thus,
the incredibly successful F-86 Sabre series
was born, arguably the best performing and
best looking first-generation jet fighter.
After observing the success of the F-86
in the Korean War, the Navy approached
North American to develop a carrier variant
of the F-86. The FJ-2 was based on the
penultimate Korean Sabre variant, the F-86E.
It was essentially an F-86E, but with 4x20 mm
cannons instead of the 6x50 calibre guns of
the Sabre, and adding catapult and arresting
gear and an extended nose gear strut.
These modifications added 500 kg to
the aircraft, significantly degrading its
performance compared to the F-86E. Due to
its poor performance, and other issues, the
Navy considered the FJ-2 unsuitable for carrier
operations, so sent them to the US Marine Corps
for operations from land (although the Marines
did deploy them to sea on a couple of cruises).THE KIT
The Sword FJ-2 comes in an end-opening
box, with a fine rendering of an FJ-2 in flight
on the front, and colour side-views of the
marking schemes on the back. The kit is a
typical short-run offering: soft grey plastic,
flash, large sprue gates, no locating pins,
etc. It has an excellent clear thin windscreen
and canopy, as good as anything out there.
Colourful marking schemes are provided
for three aircraft. The instructions are legible
and well- printed, with coloured areas for
some of the interior areas, but they are a
little vague in some of the trickier areas.THE BUILD
Construction started, as usual, with the interior.
The kit has a nice resin ejection seat, which
needs to be carefully removed from the casting
block to avoid breaking off the leg restraints
and ejection handle (I had to replace the leg
restraints with thin wire). The instrument
panel and side consoles have well-done raised
detail that must be carefully hand-painted, as
no decals are included for them. The FJ-2s were
built right at the time the Navy was switching
over to Dark Gull Gray (FS36231) for interiors,
so I went with that. The only additions were
seat belts and harnesses, made from tape.
Before joining the fuselage halves, the inlets
and exhaust were assembled and painted per the
instructions: white inside the inlet and burnt
metal for the jet pipe. Unfortunately, these parts
are split horizontally, resulting in visible seams
along their length. I pressed the two halves
together and glued them from the outside to
minimize glue push-out in the visible interiors.
