his latest in the popular

Modeller Datafile series

of books from SAM

Publications (the 29th in the

series) looks at the Panavia

Tornado. This is an aircraft

which has recently seen several

manufacturers producing

kits, so the book is well timed,

especially if you have some

of these kits in your stash.

The book opens with a look

at the design and development

of the type, before moving on to

the RAF IDS (Interdiction/Strike)

Tornado GR1 and later variants.

This chapter covers the role of these

variants during the first Gulf War

and subsequent conflicts. Whilst in

the latter conflicts some nose art

was applied, that applied during

the first Gulf War is certainly

more colourful and varied, and

is illustrated in this book with

contemporary colour images.

The next chapter looks at

the ADV (Air Defence Variant)

Tornado. As with the preceding

chapter, there is an introduction

to the type, before moving

on to look at it in service, and

again, its role in conflicts.

The next chapters cover the

type in Luftwaffe, Italian Air

Force, and Royal Saudi Air Force

service. One particular photo from

the RSAF chapter caught my eye,

which shows at least ten airframes

with their undercarriage up on the

sand, being broken up. A recreation

of this photo in model form would

make an excellent diorama!

The next part of the book opens

with six pages of colour profiles,

before moving on to 25 pages of

colour walk-around photos of the

Tornado, which cover the different

variants and just about every part

of the airframe you could wish for.

The section is rounded off with eight

pages of “colourful” Tornados.

As the introduction says, the type

has worn many special schemes over

the years, and the pictures that are

included are just a small selection!

The Luftwaffe schemes are certainly

the most eye-catching of those

included, with some excellent Tiger

Squadron artwork represented.

The main part of the book

is rounded off with 7 kit

builds: two of the Revell 1/72

scale Tornado ECR (Electronic

Combat/Reconnaissance),

two of the Revell 1/48 scale

Tornado IDS, one of the 1/48

scale Hobbyboss Tornado

IDS, one of the Italeri 1/48

scale Tornado F3, and

rounding off the section,

a build of the Revell 1/48

scale F3 ADV test shot.

The appendices of the book

include a section of line-

drawn profiles that highlight

the differences between the

versions, a list of the squadrons

using the Tornado, and

technical diagrams. The last

appendix is the Kitography,

covering kits, decals and

accessories. Inside the back

cover there is a pull-out section with

1/48 scale plans of the Tornado.

If you have any of the kits listed

in the kitography in your stash,

then this book may just give you the

inspiration you need to build them!
