Mary Koval is not only
a quilt shop owner but
also a fabric designer,
renowned quilt
historian, vintage quilt
and textiles dealer,
and author of several
quilting books.

A few pieces of antique furnishings are
used to display books, kits, and quilts.
The chickens above the color wall, made
from a pattern by Luella Doss, make fun
conversation pieces.

playing with patterns and a nearly
encyclopedic knowledge of quilting
history. She brought that wealth of
information to the design process,
working for five fabric manufacturers
over the years. Today, she designs for
Windham Fabrics. She also gives
talks and presentations on a wide
range of topics, including her design
methods and how quilters can add


value to their quilts. Her two staffers
keep the shop running smoothly
while she’s gone.
Amidst all her other adventures,
Mary opened Mary’s Quilt Shop, and
it has been serving customers from all
over New England and Canada for
nearly a decade. Visitors to the shop
find a cheery space that’s just as
colorful on the interior as it is on the

exterior; a retreat center that hosts
internationally renowned teachers,
knitting retreats, art classes, and
bridal showers; and one-of-a-kind
antique quilts gracing the walls.
“We’re different from other
shops,” Mary says. “There aren’t
thousands and thousands of bolts
here—there are fewer than 500.
We’re more about kits. We have
