  1. Remove two triangles from one
    corner; join triangles to make a
    triangle-square (Diagram 7). Th e
    triangle-square should be 4" square
    including seam allowances. Return
    triangle-square to design wall. Repeat
    to make four triangle-squares total.

  2. Referring to Quilt Assembly
    Diagram, join four small Flying
    Geese units along left-hand edge of
    quilt center to make a short border 3
    strip. Press seams in one direction.
    Th e strip should be 4× 281 ∕ 2 "
    including seam allowances. Repeat
    with right-hand edge to make a
    second short border 3 strip.
    8. Join the two triangle-squares and
    four small Flying Geese units along
    quilt center’s top edge to make a
    long border 3 strip. Press seams in
    one direction. Th e strip should be
    4 × 351 ∕ 2 " including seam allowances.
    Repeat with bottom edge to make a
    second long border 3 strip.
    9. Sew short border 3 strips to
    opposite edges of quilt center. Add
    long border 3 strips to remaining
    edges. Press all seams toward
    border 2. Th e quilt center now
    should be 35^1 ∕ 2 " square including
    seam allowances.


Cut, Assemble, and
Add Border 4
From assorted medium and dark
prints and large fl orals, cut:


  • 28—3× 51 ∕ 2 " rectangles

  • 4—3" squares



  1. Sew together seven print or
    fl oral 3× 51 ∕ 2 " rectangles along short
    ends to make a short border 4 strip
    (Quilt Assembly Diagram, page 31).
    Press seams in one direction. Th e
    strip should be 3× 351 ∕ 2 " including
    seam allowances. Repeat to make a
    second short border 4 strip.

  2. Sew together two print or
    fl oral 3" squares and seven print
    or fl oral 3× 51 ∕ 2 " rectangles to
    make a long border 4 strip (Quilt
    Assembly Diagram). Press seams in
    one direction. Th e strip should be
    3 × 401 ∕ 2 " including seam allowances.
    Repeat to make a second long
    border 4 strip.

  3. Sew short border 4 strips to
    opposite edges of quilt center. Add
    long border 4 strips to remaining
    edges. Press all seams toward
    border 4. Th e quilt center now
    should be 40^1 ∕ 2 " square including
    seam allowances.

Add Border 5
From assorted light prints, cut:


  • 2—5^1 ∕ 2 " squares
    From assorted medium and dark
    prints, cut:

  • 2—5^1 ∕ 2 " squares
    From assorted light, medium, and
    dark prints and large fl orals, cut:

  • 20—4^1 ∕ 2 × 81 ∕ 2 " rectangles

  • 40—4^1 ∕ 2 " squares (20 sets of
    2 matching squares)
