  1. Referring to Diagram 1, sew a
    beige batik small triangle to right-
    hand edge of a light blue batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 "
    square. Add a beige batik small
    triangle to bottom edge of square to
    make a triangle unit. Repeat to make
    four triangle units total.

  2. Sew together a triangle unit and
    a cream batik large triangle to make
    a corner unit (Diagram 2). The unit
    should be 6^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
    seam allowances. Repeat to make
    four corner units total.

  3. Referring to Diagram 3, lay out
    corner units, medium blue batik


Diagram 2

31 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangles, and remaining
light blue batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square in three
rows. Sew together pieces in rows.
Join rows to make a block. The block
should be 15^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances.


  1. Repeat steps 1–4 to make 12
    blocks total.


Assemble Quilt Center
Referring to Quilt Assembly
Diagram, lay out blocks, beige
batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 151 ⁄ 2 " sashing rectangles,
and six blue batik No. 1 and/
or No. 2—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares in seven
rows. Sew together pieces in each
row. Press seams toward sashing
rectangles. Join rows to make quilt
center. Press seams away from
block rows. The quilt center should
be 51^1 ⁄ 2 × 691 ⁄ 2 " including seam
allowances.

Assemble and Add Borders


  1. Sew together four assorted dark
    blue batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 151 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
    and three blue batik No. 1 and/or
    No. 2—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares to make a long
    inner border strip (Quilt Assembly
    Diagram). Press seams toward dark
    blue batik rectangles. The strip
    should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 691 ⁄ 2 " including seam
    allowances. Repeat to make a second
    long inner border strip.

  2. Sew together four blue batik
    No. 1 and/or No. 2—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
    and three dark blue batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 151 ⁄ 2 "
    rectangles to make a short inner
    border strip (Quilt Assembly
    Diagram). Press seams toward dark
    blue batik rectangles. The strip
    should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 571 ⁄ 2 " including seam
    allowances. Repeat to make a second
    short inner border strip.
    3. Sew long inner border strips to
    long edges of quilt center. Add short
    inner border strips to remaining
    edges. Press all seams toward inner
    border. The quilt center now should
    be 57^1 ⁄ 2 × 751 ⁄ 2 " including seam
    allowances.
    4. Sew together two light blue batik
    31 ⁄ 2 " squares and a medium blue
    batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 91 ⁄ 2 " rectangle to make a
    middle border unit (Diagram 4). The
    unit should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 151 ⁄ 2 " including
    seam allowances. Repeat to make 14
    middle border units total.
    5. Referring to Quilt Assembly
    Diagram, sew together five medium
    blue batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares and four
    middle border units to make a long
    middle border strip. Press seams
    toward medium blue batik squares.
    The strip should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 751 ⁄ 2 "
    including seam allowances. Repeat
    to make a second long middle
    border strip.
    6. Sew together two light blue batik
    31 ⁄ 2 " squares, four medium blue
    batik 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares, and three middle
    border units to make a short middle
    border strip. Press seams toward
    medium blue batik squares. The strip
    should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 631 ⁄ 2 " including seam
    allowances. Repeat to make a second
    short middle border strip.
    7. Sew long middle border strips to
    long edges of quilt center. Add short
    middle border strips to remaining
    edges. Press all seams toward inner
    border. The quilt center now should
    be 63^1 ⁄ 2 × 811 ⁄ 2 " including seam
    allowances.
