Assemble and Add Borders

  1. Sew solid gray 5^1 ⁄ 2 ×62" inner
    border strips to opposite edges
    of quilt center (Quilt Assembly
    Diagram). Add solid gray 5^1 ⁄ 2 ×72"
    inner border strips to remaining
edges. Press all seams toward inner
border. The quilt center now should
    be 72" square including seam
    allowances.

  2. Cut assorted B print 2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42"
strips into enough 5"- to 14"-long
pieces to total 310" in length. Using
diagonal seams, sew together B print
    strips to make:

  • 2—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×76" middle border strips

  • 2—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×72" middle border strips
    3. Sew short middle border strips
to opposite edges of quilt center.
Add long middle border strips to
    remaining edges. Press all seams
toward inner border. The quilt center
now should be 76" square including
    seam allowances.
    4. Sew solid gray 10^1 ⁄ 2 ×76" outer
border strips to opposite edges of
    quilt center. Add solid gray 10^1 ⁄ 2 ×96"
    outer border strips to remaining
edges to complete quilt top. Press
    all seams toward outer border.

Finish Quilt

  1. Layer quilt top, batting, and
    backing; baste. (For details, see
    Complete Quilt, Pattern Sheet 2.)
    2. Quilt as desired. Designer Jan
    Kittle machine-quilted arcs in the
diamond units, a pattern of circles
and swirls in the solid gray areas, and
a curving vine in the middle border.
    3. Cut remaining assorted A and
    B print 2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips into enough
    5"- to 20"-long pieces to total 410"
    in length. Using diagonal seams,
join assorted strips to make a pieced
    binding strip. Bind quilt with
    pieced binding strip. (For details,
    see Complete Quilt.)
