The finisher

HOW I DID IT
Claude restores well-worn footwear back to it’s former
glory. I thought photographing Claude wearing his
protective mask would make a more compelling portrait to

draw focus to his eyes. Claude stands at the machine known
as The Finisher, which completes every shoe’s restoration.
Sun shining through Claude’s shop window provided soft
diffused light. I wanted this environmental portrait to reflect
Claude’s ever present cheerfulness despite the cramped
space he has to work within.

Peter, waiting for his wife to arrive at a
local park

HOW I DID IT
Peter greeted me with a warm smile and
introduced me to his brother Grant who had
little English. Peter sat for a few minutes to
allow me to talk with him and take his portrait.
He had the darkest eyes and even when looking
into the shadows did not open those eyes more
than a crack. We left with a hearty handshake.

Nikon D810, 70mm lens, 1/200s @ f5.6, ISO 64.
