Australian Photography – September 2019

EDITOR’S NOTE

B

lack and White photography really is in our
DNA, and something we hold very close to
our hearts. Consider this very magazine, es-
tablished way back in 1950, yet it only went
to full colour spreads in the late 90s. We’ve always
championed black and white photography; from
countless tips stories for making the most of your
black and white images, to profiles on some of our
best black and white shooters, and of course the
hugely competitive black and white category in our
Photographer of the Year competition, which has
shone a spotlight on some of our best up-and-com-
ing black and white shooters for the past six years.
So it’s fair to say our first dedicated black and
white issue is something that’s been stewing away
for a long time. We’ve always wanted to do a dedi-
cated black and white edition, but always felt we
needed something to give it a bit more prestige,
rather than a special issue just for the sake of it. En-
ter the 2019 Mono Awards.
Run for the first time, and with our sister publi-
cation Capture and the generous support of Mo-
mento Photo books and Kudos cameras, The Mono
Awards photography competition had one distinct
goal: to celebrate the best of black and white. More
than 2,000 photographers from Australia and New
Zealand entered the single-image photo competi-
tion with just two categories: people and places,

and we’re hugely excited to share the winners with
you in this issue.
A quick look over the top 10 images in each cat-
egory clearly shows the secret to a good black and
white image isn’t necessarily as simple as you might
think. There’s having the ability to ‘see’ in black and
white, and assess the kind of image that best suits
the treatment. There’s also the ability to edit with
subtlety to best emphasise the subject without over-
cooking it – sometimes a very fine line indeed.
These are some of the topics Nick Rains touches on
in his in-depth look at producing and editing black
and white images which you can find from page 46,
and something our featured photographer in this is-
sue, Allen Koppe, has perfected with his long expo-
sure landscapes and cityscapes.
What I love about black and white photography
is it asks us as photographers to strip our images
back to the barest essentials of photography – the
light, and the interplay between our subject and the
scene. With black and white, less really is more. Or,
as our esteemed judge Douwe Djikstra puts it best,
colour is just a distraction. ❂
