2019 MONO AWARDS: JUDGES’ PANEL

Self taught, travel hungry and with
a healthy thirst to grow as an image-
maker he thrives on the challenge
and freshness of shooting a wide
diversity of genres, ranging from fine
art nudes, landscapes, and large-scale
event photography through to fashion,
travel, documentary and environmental
portraiture – though he’s most
renowned for his exquisite landscape
imagery, particularly from the air.
Paul is a Master of Photography in
the AIPP (2 Gold Bars) and Fellow of
the NZIPP (2 Gold Bars), two times
Winner and four times Finalist for
International Photographer of the
Year in NZ, three times Tasmanian
Professional Photographer of the
Year and seven times Tasmanian
Landscape Photographer of the
Year. He judges regularly at a state,
national and international level, runs
photography workshops worldwide and
writes for numerous magazines and
publications. He is a member of the
progressive landscape collaborative
The Light Collective, an Ambassador
for Asukabook fine art books and his
work is represented by One Fine Print in
Australia and Source Photographica in
Australia and the USA. 


Alex Vaughan


ALEXVAUGHAN.COM
Alex Vaughan has spent the last seven
years travelling and working in Australia,
the U.S., New Zealand and Europe on
various commissioned and personal
projects. The first part of her major body
of personal work ‘In Their Element’ is due
for exhibition in Australia in 2020.
She was awarded the Highly
Commended Prize at the 2019 National
Photographic Portrait Prize for her image
‘Sumbawa Pride – Life on a boat with 11
kids.’ She was also a finalist in 2011.
Vaughan has been a finalist in the
Head On Portrait Prize three times -
2017, 2014, 2011 and won the People
Choice Award in 2011.
She received critical acclaim in 2010
as an emerging photographer after
winning ‘The People’s Choice Award’ at
the Sony ACMP Projections Emerging
Photographers Competition for her
series ‘Les and Eileen’. The series was
also published in and won Capture
Magazine’s Exposed Challenge.
In 2017, her personal series ‘In Their
Element’ was the featured project in
Capture Magazine’s May/June issue.

William L ong

Photographer, Speaker, Mentor and
Educator; William Long is arguably one
of Australia’s most reputable, successful
and technically diverse professional
photographers. In addition to winning
numerous national and international
professional awards across multiple
photographic categories, William has
been recognised for his excellence in
Photography with Fellowships from
the British Institute of Professional
Photography (BIPP) and the Royal
Photographic Society (RPS). In 2014,
William was also the recipient of a rare
Honorary Life Membership from the
Australian Institute of Professional
Photography (AIPP), and then in 2016
awarded an Honorary Life Membership
from the British Institute of Professional
Photography (BIPP) in recognition of
his outstanding professionalism and
voluntary work in the Photographic
Industry. He is also a recipient of
Quintuple Gold Bars – AIPP Master of
Photography from the AIPP.
William’s photography has been featured
in hundreds of publications internationally,
including The New York Times, South China
News and Time magazine; and he has also
photographed many international artists
including The Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond
and Willem Dafoe.
William is also the Founder and
Managing Director of PhotoWatchDog,
a private industry advocacy concern
that lobbies companies, governments,
organisations and individuals who produce
photographic competitions to establish fair
terms and conditions for all entrants.

Jackie Ranken


JACKIERANKEN.CO.NZ
Jackie has over thirty eight years’
experience within the visual arts and
has been an international photography
awards judge since 2002.
She learnt her craft by working
within the photographic industry as
a darkroom technician, freelance
and sports photographer, wedding
photographer, commercial photographer
and photojournalist. In 1996 after gaining
her Associate Diploma in Fine Arts she
began working as a teacher of ‘Fine art’
photography. Now sharing her knowledge
via Queenstown Centre for Creative
Photography in New Zealand
She combines her art practice
with teaching and is a presenter
in workshops and seminars
internationally. Exhibiting
and instructing nationally and
internationally.
A longtime lover of monochromatic
photography and creator of multi-
layered narratives via in camera multiple
exposures and intentional movement.
Since 2001 she has won many
prestigious photography awards which
have culminated in making her a Grand
Master of both the Australian Institute
of Professional Photography and the
New Zealand Institute of Professional
Photography. She is a Canon Master
and EIZO Ambassador.
