Australian Photography – September 2019

(Jacob Rumans) #1

far from his home in search of images, with a large por-

tion of the catalyst for his love of the medium being in-

formed by a healthy sense of adventure and exploration.

“I love climbing down rock faces to the bottom of
lighthouses and things like that, you know. For me,

it’s as much about the process as it is about the pic-

tures,” he says. But while Koppe admits he loves noth-
ing more than to be driving down a country road and

letting the subject matter present itself, he is quick to

add that his work is not immune to inf luence by oth-
ers. When not seeking his own formal compositions

on a remote plain of New South Wales or a rugged

coastline on Australia’s eastern seaboard, Koppe trades
his salt-encrusted tripod for a healthy amount of time

spent trawling Instagram.

“Instagram has really been good because it has pushed
me to go out and take more pictures,” he says. “And my

photography is getting better because I’m aware of others’

work and I want to get out there and take more photos.”

OPPOSITE TOP: Southern nights. I love
Tasmania and try and get down there as often
as I can. I found this remote fisherman’s
shed set in the long grasses had a timeless
appeal. It took several attempts to find the
right composition. Two exposures merged in
photoshop. Fujifilm GFX 50S. 23mm F/4 R LM
WR lens. 120s @ f4.5, ISO 250.

OPPOSITE BOTTOM: One tree hill.
Canon 5D Mark IV, Zeiss 55mm Otus lens.
180s @ f5.6, ISO 100.

BELOW: Tales from the sea. Capturing this
was a little scary. I knew of this location
but only had one chance to capture it, there
was a massive surf running which made the
adventure a little too dangerous, fortunately
low tide was very early on the morning I had
to leave so I climbed down the embankment
and got in and out as quickly as I could.
