WITH DINESH PERERA, EFIAP, FAPS
I
’m a 34-year-old photographer from
Sri Lanka, although I now live in
Sydney. My interest in photography
began as a high school student in
Sri Lanka, although my background is
in Fine Art, a subject I’ve written two
books on. For my day job, I work in the
horticulture industry.
Early on I developed a relationship
with a small lab where my early efforts
shot on film came to life. This changed
when I purchased my first DSLR in
2004 and I started to self-study to get
better control of the new camera.
Bit-by-bit, my photographs started to
show improvement.
My favourite types of photography
are Portraits, Street and Travel, and I’m
driven by a passion to depict the human
condition. When shooting, I try to frame
my photographs around a structure of
patterns; these patterns could be just
about anything; architecture, streets in
the CBD or just rays of light hitting a
subject. I remain fascinated by the com-
plexities of light coming from its varied
sources. I also like to try and show a
sense of the relationship of the people to
their environment.
I use a Canon 6D Mark I and another
crop sensor camera body. My favourite
lens is the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II.
One of the best decisions I made was
to enter photography competitions in
both print and digital formats, nation-
ally and internationally. I have had suc-
cess with a few, including more than
50 gold, silver and bronze awards at the
International Federation Internatio-
nale de l’Art Photographique, and more
than 1,000 acceptances in International
FIAP contests. ❂
