IMAGE DOCTOR

WATCH THE DEPTH
Cooper Wakefield wrote: "This image was taken in the
harsh middle of the day sunlight as a creative interlude
in between shooting looks for the model. I shot in
B&W to elicit a more emotional reaction to the scene,
and really contrast the model to her surroundings.
My intention was to capture the feeling of being
metaphorically lost at sea; which I envisioned as lost
within your mind, battling with whatever struggle you
may be battling with."
If I hadn't read the explanation, I wouldn't have
guessed how the image was to be interpreted. That
said, it could have been done with a less centralised
composition - say the female off-centre left -  and
without the line of the sea cutting across the model's
body. The vast expanse of featureless sky seems a
waste but presumably is part of your vision. However
the shallow depth of field means those foreground
rocks are out-of-focus and unattractive. The
unflattering lighting with all the harsh shadows also
doesn't help. Rocks are interesting because of their
textures and details, but they have to be sharp so we
can see them.

SAIMA'S TIP: Two ways of getting better depth of
field are to use a wider-angle lens or a smaller lens
aperture.
