JAGUAR LandRover is trialling an
innovative recycling process which
converts plasticwaste in to a new premium
grade material thatcould feature on
futurevehicles.
It’s estimated that the amountof waste
plastic is predictedto exceed 12 million
tonnes globallyby 2050.Today, not all
of this plasticcan be recycled for use in
automotive applications –especially in
vehicle parts that arerequiredto meet the
most exactingsafety and qualitystandards.
Working inconjunction with chemical
company, BASF, JLR ispart of a pilot
projectcalled ChemCycling that upcycles
domestic waste plastic,otherwise destined
for landfill or incinerators, into a new high-
quality material.
The waste plastic is transformedto
pyrolysis oil using a thermochemical
proc ess. This secondaryraw material is
then fed in to BASF’s production chain
as a replacementfor fossil resources;
ultimately producing a new premium
grade thatreplicates the high quality
and performanceof ‘virgin’ plastics.
Importantly, it can be tempered and
coloured, making it the ideal sustainable
solutionfor designing the next-generation
dashboards andexterior surfaces in Jaguar
and LandRover models.
