CUMBRIA Classic LandRoverswas
inspiredbythestart ofa LandRover
magazinefor classic LandRovers,
hence the name.Atthe timeCumbria
didn’treally havea club or group that
justcovered all theSeries LandRov-
ers, and mostofthe group’s founding
memberswereofthe OldLeafsprung
LandRover and theSeriouslySeries
Forums.Theydecidedtodosome-
thing better andkeep it more local.
Since its launch, the group has
gone fromstrengthtostrength and
attracted lotsofinterestand new
members. Someofthesenew mem-
bers had more modern Defenders and
the like, although newer modelswere
welcomed theywerenever really what
theCumbria Classic LandRovers
groupwas about, and they splintered
offtoform the Lake District Landrover
Meet group. Mostare joint members
ofboth andeveryoneattends and sup-
portsone anothers’ events.

As a groupwespend a lotoftime look-
ing after andrepairing local lanes. We
do not publish theroutesas theytendto
get hammered assoon as they are made
public. Laning isstill asensitive issue and
everyone should always check out their
routesthemselvesbeforedriving them.
Therewas agoodselectionoflanes
drivenover theweekend inCumbria, Dur-
ham and Northumberland.Todrive the
laneswesplit intothree groups according
toability and theroutesthe group leaders
had chosen. One beingscenic andeasy


going, one being more challenging and
theother had the possibilityofbecoming
stuck and mayberequiring a winch.
Onceeveryone hadreturnedtothe
campsite, it madefor hoursofdiscussion
astowho had the bestday, bestlanes
and who had oneofthoselack-of-talent
moments, or a breakdown.But Icouldn’t
possiblysay who did what, as what hap-
pensatWeird DalestaysatWeird Dale.
Thatsaid thisyear’s event didraise close
to£100for theFairhillRecreation Ground
Tr ust in Alston.Plans are being discussed
for Weird Dale 2020,soguessI willsee
you nextyear.
