Later that day Itook Billy for a run along
the beach andcame acrossa baby seal, which
at fi rst I thoughtwas stranded, butsoon
waddledback into the shallowwater asI
approachedto take a photo. LikemyDiscovery,
it was infi ne health.
Back home in Northamptonshire, thefi ne
summerweather has meant plenty of trips out
into the lovely Nenevalley, both in the
Discovery and Ninety, aswell as onfoot, of
course. For somereason there have been more
frogs andtoads around thisyear than Ican
ever rememberseeing before and Ieven
managedto get very close to a hugetoad
basking in the sun, snappingoffseveral
pictures before he got bored and disappeared
back into the undergrowth.
Fingers crossed, I will be ableto enjoy the
rest of the summer withouttoo many Land
Rover dramas.

Besidesrebuilding muchof the body, he also
replaced thesteering drag links(whichwere
worn) and therear anti-rollbar joints (ditto). At
the endof theweek he booked it infor its MoT
and itpassed withfl yingcolours. The total bill
was less than £1000 – and I’m delighted to
have my faithfuleveryday wheelsfor at least
anotheryear. I’mconvinced I made the right
decision – what doyou think?
Back in Norfolk aweek later for myschool
reunionat theKing Edward VIISchool,King’s
Lynn, Iwas delighted to meetmyold history
master, John Smallwood, for thefi rst time since

  1. Now in his late 80s, I’m sure hecouldn’t
remember me among the thousandsof boys
and girls hetaughtover theyears, but Ican
certainlyremember him – which is whyI
    dedicated mynew book,The LandRover Story,
to him. Iwas thrilledto hand him acopy.
Therewas a mischievous glint in hiseye as
he read the inscription. “Mmm, I suppose I will
have to stop moaning about Chelsea tractors
now,” he growled. Iwonder if he’ll mark it out
    of ten?
