152 LANDROVER MONTHLY

RANGE ROVER 2
(P38A)
1994 to 2002
BETTER THANsome would
have you belie ve, the second-
generation RangeRover’s
reputation for unreliability
is sometimes undeserved.
For a luxury 4x4, prices are
very lo w. No serious rust
issues to speak of and if
you are handy with electrics
and a laptop computer, you
can use diagnostic software
to solve mo st problems.
Replacementparts can be
pricey though. The die sel
option is a BMW six-pot
turbo. V8 petrols
are thir sty.

BUYER’S TIP:1990s luxury
for not much money.
SPECIFICATIONS:4.0: 4.0-litre
V8 petrol, 185 bhp,235 lb-f t
torque. 4.6: 4.6-litre V8 petrol,
225 bhp, 277 lb-ft torque. 2.5:
2.5-litre six-cylinderturbo die sel,
134 bhp, 199 lb-fttorque. R380
manual or ZFfour-speed auto,
permanentfour-wheel drive.
PRICE GUIDE:

Average:£900 – £2000
Good:£2000 – £3200
Excellent:£3000 – £6000

FREELANDER 1
1997 to 2006
AN AFFORDABLE entry-level
Land Rover, and popular
as ever. The 1.8-litre petrol
enginescan be troublesome
and be st avoided. The early
diesels are economical,
mechanically simple and
reliable if properlyserviced
(and timing beltsregularly
renewed). The la ter Td4 is
chain-driven, more or less
bulletproof and the best
choice. The Freelander has
no rust issuesto worry
about. Great value.

BUYER’S TIP:Td4 die sels
good for 200 ,000-plus
miles.

SPECIFICATIONS

cylinder
petrol, 118 bhp, 121 lb-ft;

Good:£2000 – £3000
Excellent:£3000 – £5000

DISCOVERY 2
1998 to 2004
THE DISCOVERY 2 retained
the stepped-roof looks
and basic shapeof its
predec essor, but got an
improved bodyshell and
suspension, along with new
engines and axles. It was the
best-handling LandRover in
its day and there are plenty
to choose from even no w.
V8 petrols areexpensive
to run, while asyou migh t
expect Td5 die sels ar e
economical.The bodies last
well, but the chassis is prone
to spectacular levels of rust

  • puttingsome examples
    beyond economicrepair.

BUYER’S TIP:Invest in
a galvanised chassis and
you've got a Dis co for lif e.
SPECIFICATIONS

(Td5), 122 bhp,221 lb-ft torque;
4.0-litre V8 petrol, 185 bhp, 235

Excellent:£3800 – £6200

DEFENDERTd5
1998 to 2007
THE FIVE-CYLINDERTd5 was
the last LandRover-derived
diesel engine and it has
proved pr etty bulletproofover
the years, provided it has
been properlyserviced. Now
in gr eat demand as prices
for all De fenders steadily
rise. There's a good number
of special editionsto choose
from and, ifyou are looking
for a utilityvehicle, a healthy
numberof truck cabs and
hard-tops are always on sale.
Rear cr ossmembers proneto
rust, but easily replaced.
There is a growing supplyof
Td5 engines from Discovery 2s
that are beingscrapped dueto
serious rust issues. Non-OEM
parts cheap.

BUYER’S TIP:Check service
history.
SPECIFICATIONS
2.5-litre five-cylinderturbo
diesel, 122 bhp,221 lb-ft torque.
R380 five-speed transmission,
permanentfour-wheel drive.
PRICE GUIDE
Poor:£4800 – £5800
Average:£5800 – £7900
Good:£7900 – £9900
Excellent:£9900 – £18,000

RANGE ROVER 3
(L322) 2002 to 2012
EARLY THIRD-GENERATION
Range Rovers are no w
over 15 years old andcan
be picked up cheap, but
don’t underestimate the
runningcosts – especially
from petrol V8s.The
diesel Td6 is le ss thirsty.
Drivetrain and electrical
faults are common, but
the bigg est problem is
previous owners who have
skimped onservicing and
repairs and run them into
the ground.Buy a neglected
L322 and you're askingfor
trouble. When L322s start
to go wrong, theyget very
expensive to put right and
parts aren’t cheap, either.

BUYER’S TIP:Prices falling,
but be ware of the dog s.
SPECIFICATIONS
2002-2005:4.4-litre BMW V8
petrol, 282 bhp, 325 lb-ft torque.
2002-2007:3.0-litre BMWTd6
turbodiesel, 177 bhp ,
287 lb-ft torque.
PRICE GUIDE
Poor:£1500 – £2500
Average:£2500 – £4000
Good:£4000 – £6800
Excellent:£6800 – £11,000

DEFENDERTDCi
2007 to 2016
FOUR-CYLINDERFORD TDCi
turbo-diesel (shared with
the Transit van) matched to
a six-speedgearbox and an
all-new dashboardwere all
part of 2007’s majorrevamp.
The lo ss of front airvents and
the distinctive humped bonnet
aren’t to everyone ’s tast e –
and noteverybody loves the
transmission either – but
the brilliantoff-road abilit y
remains. The original 2.4-litre
engine was replaced in
2012 with a new 2.2-litre unit
with be tter emissions.
Sadly, production ended in
2016.

BUYER’S TIP:Prices remain
steady, but thefts rising.

SPECIFICATIONS

turbodiesel, 122 bhp,
221 lb-ft torque.2012-on:2.2-litr e

bhp, 265 lb-ft torque. Six-speed
MT85 gearbox, permanentfour-
wheel drive.
PRICE GUIDE
Poor:£6300 – £8200
Average:£8200 – £11,500
Good:£11,500 – £18,000
Excellent:£18,000 – £50,000

FREELANDER 2
2006 to 2015
A BIG improvement on
Freelander 1.The towing
capacity is just 2000 kg
compared with the 3500
kg of bigger LandRovers,
but it ’s a worthy alternative
to a Dis covery. Lackof
low-range and ground
clearance prevents hardcor e
off-roading, but it iscertainly
still competent in the rough.
Reasonable on fuel and with
a decen t-sized boot, too,
there are no rust issues and
it’s ultra-reliable.Residual
values arefalling now it
has been superseded by
Discovery Spor t, so it's a bit
of a bargain.

BUYER'S TIP:An economical
and trouble-free buy.

RANGE ROVER 4
(L405)
2012 to present
WITH its aluminium chassis,
the fourth-generation Range
Rover is 420 kg lighter than
its predecessor. Coupled
with efficient new diesel
engines, it’s more frugal
than any previous Rangie,
too. It’s all compar ative
though...Taking
depreciation into account, it
will be several years be fore

economical motoring. Make
no mis take about it: this isa
car for all thewell-heeled.

BUYER’S TIP:A lot of car –
for a lot of money.

RANGE ROVER
SPORT 1 2005 to 2013
THE SPORT fulfils thefast
premium 4x4segment with
style. It shares the same
platform as the Discovery
3/4 and is just as impressive
off-road. A gr eat long-distance
cruiser and entertaining on
the rightroads. If you need
a load-lugger though, the
more versatile Dis covery
is be tter. Tyres, brak es and
suspensiontend to have a
hard time,so buy carefully.
Despite beingreplaced by
the second-generation Sport,
early models arestill popular.
But are they beginningto look
a bit da ted?

RANGE ROVER
EVOQUE2011 to 2018
NOT A favourite with Land
Rover enthusiasts, but a huge
hit with thegeneral public
who ha ve turned it into the
brand’s best-selling model.
2WD is more economical, but
4WD is the better performer,
and it ’s not bad off-road.
Launched in 2011, there are
lots available on the market

  • and some real bargains.
The Evoque was upda ted for
    2015, withstyling tweaks
    and cleaner engines, and a
    convertible version arrived
    in 20 16.
