1957 SERIESI 86 INCH(‘LAURO’)

HUGH ADDISON, CHARTERED ENGINEER, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

How didyou find this project?
An advert onFacebook. I’d been looking
for a Defenderto work on as a project
with the intent of doing it up asa
weddingvehicle, as I’m marryingmy
fiancée Rachel inSept ember. Itturned
out itwas only five milesaway. After a
shorttest drive the Defenderwas quickly
forgotten about.

What’s thestory sofar?
For the last nine months I’ve been
working on making sure that Lauro’s
drivable and the business for the
wedding. Lauro is a bitof a hodge-podge
of parts and fitted with an SD1’sRover
V8, aSeries IIIback axle, Defender
drum brakes and a RangeRover dif f. I’ve
carried on in thatvein with the project,
and most of the work I’ ve done is in
the nameof preservation rather than
restoration. My main objective isto
preserve Lauro’s his tory while enhancing
the details.

How is the engine running?
The engine runswell now thanksto some
expert fettling from RST LandRovers.
Prior to this thecarbs were way out.
Unfortunately for the purists I’ve no plans
to change it any timesoon. The extra
poke isvery much appreciated, as is the
V8 rumble.

Hardest part of this project?
The removal of reinforced plastic matting
from the loadbay. It was secured with
ancientcoach bolts which had long since
rusted. Angle-grindingeach onetook
forever! I’ ve now fitted wooden slats to
cover over thebattered loadbay that the
mats had been tryingto cover.

When willit be finished?
The fir st phase isscheduledfor
completionby early Sept ember. Missing
this important deadline mayresult in an
indefinite postponementof nuptials.

Who ishelpingyou with the project?
Rachel has been a huge help, as has our
eight-month-old Labrador pup, Brie.
My brother, Will, went halves with me
whenwe bought Lauro, however, he’s not
been ableto be too in volved dueto his
rugbycommitments in Ireland.
A special thanks must alsogo to
Tuckett Br othersof North Marston for
allowing meto store Lauro amongst
their Model TFords and helping me out
whenever I ran in to the most basic
of struggles.

Anythingto add?
You can follow the project updates on
Lauro’s Ins tagrampage @lauro.ver.
Please feel freeto get in touch.

What areyour plans withit?
The grand plan isto use itfor our
wedding inSept ember.After tha t, I’m not
entirely sure. We mayrent it outfor other
weddings andevents in orderto support
a more fundamental update of the wiring
and brakeset-up.
Alternatively, it mayfeature ina
culinary business venture thatwe’re
currentlyscoping out.Watch this space!

What have you doneso far?
It’s hardly been a fullrebuild. However, it
has includedrefreshing theyellow paint,
welding up vulnerableparts of bulkhead
and chassis, changing the wheels,
clearing out thecoolingsystem,
servicing the engine,removing the load
bay lining, fitting newseats, mats and
slats and adding a new bikiniroof and
toothed windscreen.
Plus loadsof other little things,
of course.

Whatnext?
That will have to be a full deconstruction
of the wiring. In truth it’s a total rat’s ne st.
A new loom will be put in, which might
hopefullyoffer the opportunity to add
some more modernfeatures, lik e
functioning indicators.
Lauro also needssome newtyres,
which will be the next job.
