Land Rover Monthly – October 2019

(Chris Devlin) #1

Our first lane of the day is abyway open to all traffic
(BOAT). This actuallystarts on the tarmacroad that runs
next to the visitor centre. Atthestart of the lane is a pair of
doublewooden gates thatweneed to negotiate. Being careful
of pedestriansweclose the gates behind us and head directly
aheadstarting up a climb with a lovely view of a pool to our
right.Stunning views is a term that maywell be used a lot
today if thestart of the trip is anything to goby. After the
climbwehead down a short section with pine tress which
makes for a lovely picture, aswepass this area the view
opens up to breathtaking proportions with views for miles as
the fog now clears.Itis herewemeet our firstrockystep.
Don’t be put off, havea look at thestep and planyourroute
down it, and ifyou need to, get a passenger to guideyou. It
should pose no problems for LandRovers but it will puta
smile onyour face asyou feel thatyou’re actually using Land
Rover’s off-road pedigree and ability whetheryou are ina
brand-new Discovery 5 or Series model.
Afterwebounce ourway along thestone trackwethen
re-join a single tarmacroad. The area and lanes are all linked
by numerous single-track tarmac B roads that wind
themselves around the landscape and several large pools
of water. This area is accessible by anyone in any type
ofvehicle andwesee people with campervans, canoes and
day trippers.
Aswedrive around and look at the OSMaps the area is
littered with old mines, standingstones and ancient forts.
The temptation to park up and go and explore this
landscape isvery tempting but todayweare here to drive the
lanes, I think I will be back toexplore more on foot ata
later date however.
