The legal answer is NO.
EGR (Exhaust Gas
Recirculation) systems on
modern diesel engines are
there for pollution
purposes. Well... that’s what
some panel of engineers and
government bureaucrats told us
when they made them a legal
requirement. The reality is that
recirculating dirty soot exhaust
gases back into a nice clean
inlet tract is not a long term
pollution solution. In the ‘out of
dealer service arena’ that we
are in we see more issues with it
for far longer than the initial
benefits. This sooty carbon

builds up in the inlet tract and
sufficiently reduces air flow to a
level that creates more pollution
in other areas such as visible
emissions. The soot being
introduced to the inlet tract
sticks to the walls of it due to
the fact that oily engine
breathing fumes are also being
recirculated through the inlet.
So what can you do about this?
Well we know we can’t legally
block off the exhaust gas
recirculation system. What we
can do though is to keep the inlet
tract nice and dry so that when
these carbons are allowed to
enter they have nothing oily to

stick to. A dry inlet means less
carbon build ups. Enter the “Oil
Catch Can”. This is an item that is
fitted into the pipe running the
oily engine fumes from the
engine (usually the rocker cover
area) to the inlet (usually found
soon after the air filter pipes). Be
careful though. Like all products,
there are good ones and bad ones
and sadly about 90% of the ones I
have seen are bad ones that don’t
work. The best one I’ve seen so
far is the Mann filters ProVent
series.
These have a history to back
up their effectiveness and utilise
a proper internal replaceable

filter to trap the oil particles and
remove them.
Like all products, it’s best to
do your research first and a good
place to start is by talking to your
diesel expert to get sound advice.
