After over a decade working in Australia’s best 4WD magazine, Shauno reflects on
one of the best careers a bloke could ever have.

300 NOT OUT!

ou’ve no doubt heard
the old saying, ‘work
in a job you love, and
you’ll never work a day
in your life’, as cliché
as that might sound, this really
has been the motto for my
career. Ever since I got my
drivers licence and bought an
old Suzuki Sierra I have been
bitten by the 4WD bug and over
the years it has only become
more of an obsession.
I started with 4WD Monthly
(that’s what 4WD Action was
called over 10 years ago) and I
think I started at issue number
104 and my name was in print
not long after that. Now I sit
down to write my column for
issue 300 and reflect on what
has been an amazing career in
Australia’s best magazine.
Over the years, we have
been a lot different from the
other off-road publications
and have really set ourselves
apart. I am still very proud that
we show and encourage many
people to get outdoors and
explore this amazing country,
take the tracks less travelled
and camp with their family and
friends. We have introduced
many to the 4WD bug and
could probably be responsible
for making more 4WD
enthusiasts than just about
any other magazine or TV
show. Best of all, we’ve been
able to show people that you
don’t need an unlimited bank
balance to enjoy this lifestyle.
We’ve shown people over the
years how to buy great
second-hand bargains and
how to modify and accessorise
them to be better suited to
tough tracks and touring. I
know we’ve helped more
families find this lifestyle and


helped them share quality
time together and for that, I’m
very proud to be a part of this
brand.
We’ve of course become
more than just a magazine
over the decade and a bit that
I’ve been working for 4WD
Action. We were one of the
first to include DVDs with the
magazine and weren’t they
popular! We were able to make
our way into people’s lounge
rooms and show them the best
4WDing and campsites and

that was a monumental step
for our brand. Fast forward to
today and we’ve taken our
content onto YouTube so that it
can reach even more Aussie
people and best of all it’s free
for everyone to enjoy.
The evolution of the 4WD
Action brand has been nothing
short of amazing and the best
part of it is that we haven’t
forgot our roots and still strive
to show Aussies the best ways
to get outdoors and explore
the best country in the world

on a budget.
Reaching the milestone of
300 issues calls for
celebration. I think I’m going to
have a beer while I wash the
Dirty 30! W
