“Hi Guys,
I just watched the most recent 4WD Action Moreton Island episode
on YouTube”, explains Jackson. “I saw your epic recovery of the
Patrol that was lost to the tide and Graham asked for pictures of epic
recoveries so I thought I would send you my most epic recovery.
This was a Monday night on Woolies beach near Hastings in
Victoria and it’s a hell of a story. It began with two mates exploring
where they shouldn’t, and getting stuck, someone coming to help and
then they they also got stuck... Then that’s where I came in and came
up with a better recovery plan until I burnt my winch out trying to
rescue the Patrol. The recovery ended up taking until about one in
the morning. After my winch burnt out I put a call out on Aussie 4WD
Rescue on Facebook and had an amazing response with about 12
vehicles coming to help, one of which was able to move into my winch
spot and recover both vehicles. It was an epic night!

Kind regards,
Jackson”

G’day Jackson, mate by the looks of those photos it looks like you
had your work cut out for you! Sounds like one heck of a recovery
and I’m stoked to hear everything worked out in the end. It’s funny
how quickly Murphy’s Law comes into effect when things start going
pear shaped! I reckon your story really shows what it means to be a
4WDer; helping out your mates. The fact that so many 4WDers came
out to help you makes me proud to be amongst a group of cracking
people. Of course the main thing is I’m glad no one was hurt and the
vehicles could be recovered safely. Thanks for writing in mate, stay
safe out there!

Graham

“Hey Guys,
I’m in the market for a relatively budget used 4WD for family
camping and my daily driver (I have a small commute to work)”,
explains Gareth. “Not going up mountains and across rivers but
something I can get across some bush tracks and onto the beach
with confidence and reliability.
I’m currently thinking about a dual cab ute due to the balance of
towing, storage and value for money. We pull a braked camper
trailer and also need to fit three child seats across the back on
family trips. I currently have a Santa Fe which is surprisingly
capable but its ground clearance isn’t good enough for beach
bashing.
Models I’m keen on include HiLux, BT50 and Triton with the
Triton seeming to fit the budget better. Any tips and
recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!
Gareth James

G’day Gareth – mate it sounds like you’re already on the right track
there! Dualcabs are the perfect choice for work and play, and the fact
they have a massive cargo area is just a bonus. Out of the three
options you’ve narrowed it down to, each one has their pros and cons.
The pros of the HiLux is parts availability and reliability, but the con
is the Toyota tax even for second hand models. That said, because the

market is generally saturated with HiLuxes, sometimes you can grab
a bargain. The BT-50 would be my choice if I was looking for a later
model, as it has that powerhouse of a five cylinder as well as one of
the highest payloads for your gear. Plus bang for buck you can do one
up with the money saved compared to if you bought say, an XLT
Ranger. The Triton represents the best value for money as you
stated, and isn’t a bad vehicle by any means. I reckon out of the three
options you’re looking at, If it was me I’d be stoked with any of them
in my driveway. Just gotta weigh up your budget and what you use
the vehicle for and go from there. I hope that helps mate!
