Australian 4WD Action – August 2019

(Kiana) #1

  • GSL exhaust

  • Steinbauer performance module

  • Direction plus secondary fuel filter

  • Provent 200 catch can

  • Buds customs 4in snorkel

If there is one thing that Shaun loves, its useable, reliable
power – and that’s exactly what he’s done with the eight
cylinders of tickled Toyota fury under the bonnet. The mighty
1VD has been opened up with a custom made GSL
fabrications stainless steel exhaust. This shiny bit of kit has
an insane 5in dump pipe into a full tig welded 4in system.
Combine that with the 2in upgraded GSL crossover pipe that
frees up the flow between each cylinder bank and the end
result is an exhaust note that makes even the toughest
bushies amongst us weak at the knees. Just adding an
exhaust isn’t enough for Shauno though, as he knew that
these engines came very detuned from the factory. To help
get a bit more power out of her, Shaun has also added a
Steinbauer performance module, as well as a Buds Customs
4in snorkel. The factory snorkel for the 79s are a two piece
unit that isn’t water tight. This new powdercoated black
stainless steel snorkel not only fixes that issue, but allows
the engine to breathe a bit better when Shaun gives the loud
pedal a love tap.
You’re probably thinking, yeah okay they’re some tasty
mods but you mentioned reliability?! Yep spot on – Shaun
takes the big 79 to some extremely remote places – be it for
work or play. To that end he has added a Direction Plus
secondary fuel filter kit and a Provent 200 catch can to keep
things running clean. The end result after shouting the big
79 a dyno tune is a comfortable 173kw and 600Nm – how’s
that for angry!

hen you’re as
passionate
about 4WDing,
fishing and
camping as
Shauno, it makes sense to have
a few insane 4WDs in your fleet.
In fact Shauno is in love with the
Offroad lifestyle so much, that he
has not one but two LandCruis-
ers, while he rebuilds a third! If
that doesn’t scream passionate,
then we don’t know what does.
What we love about Shauns
Cruisers’ is that each one
serves a purpose. Sooty the 80
lives for tough touring. With
coils all round and a killer 12v
and camping setup it’s the
ultimate vehicle to tour the
Cape in, or to go tackle some
A-Grade low range and get
outdriven by Jock’s HiLux
(We’re even now eh mate?).
Then you have Shaun’s Dirty 30
rebuild which will be a deadset

track conquering weapon. With
a 60 Series cab on an 80
Chassis with a 1HD-FTE and a
tiptronic auto, Shaun will have
so much control in the tough
stuff and by keeping the tray
setup light; it represents the
ultimate track eater. Finally,
you have his big 79. This
vehicle is built to tour
comfortably, while maintaining
a lightweight but efficient
touring setup. It also serves as
Shaun’s Daily when he’s not out
six months of the year touring
some of the best places in the
country! The other job the 79
has is towing Shaun’s absolute
pride and joy TABS plate boat,
so he can get out on the water
and not catch any fish before
coming back in with a sunburn.
But enough banter for now,
let’s hook in and check out how
Shaun has set up this absolute
beast of a 79!
