Australian 4WD Action – August 2019

(Kiana) #1

  • Cummins 6BT Engine Swap

  • Holset Turbo

  • Custom Air box

“Before I fitted the engine I did a few things just to help it drive a
bit better, I installed the 4K governor spring kit allowing the engine
to rev higher but with that I also had to do some bigger 60Lb valve
springs,” Harry says.
“I chose to go a 6BT 5.9L Cummins engine, I used a custom
adaptor plate, clutch and flywheel all supplied by RAMIT
conversions. I still run the standard Nissan air con pump and
alternator because parts are easy to find if anything breaks down
in remote areas. A lot of custom brackets had to be made to fit
these as well as custom engine mounts and a modified cross
member to move the whole engine back in the engine bay because
it is so much longer than original.”
“2 x 16” SPAL thermo fans had to be used to cool the motor
because of the tight amount of room. Wiring was very easy
because the 6bt is a mechanical motor there is only 3 wires to
open and close the fuel solenoid.”
“Fuel lines needed to be upgraded in size due to the amount of
fuel the bosh P7100 fuel pump needs. The engines exhaust needs
to run over the top of the motor in order to get down under the car
because the starter motor and front drive shaft are directly below
where the turbo sits. The sump on the motor needed to be flipped
around in order to clear the diff and steering arms. The gearbox
cross-member was also modified to move the motor back 25mm
in the engine bay.”
Harry did a lot of the work himself – and the end result is a GU
putting out 1020Nm and 207Kw – he couldn’t be happier!

  • 3in lift with Dobinson Springs

  • 10” Superior Engineering Remote Res Shocks

  • Upgrade control arms, locating links, bump stops and more

  • Braced coil towers

Harry loves touring, but doesn’t mind getting out in the Glasshouse
Mountains on a weekend to stretch out the big GU. For that he
needed a fully custom suspension setup.
“I have always used Dobinsons springs and have never had any
drams with them so didn’t see the need to change for this build. If
you have all your weights sorted out there should be no problems
with sag.”
Harry went to town with Superior Engineering gear, with big
remote res shocks, hyperflex arms, and comp spec locating links.
“As for the all the Superior gear I would always choose to run
their stuff because of the amount of money and time they have put
into road testing all their equipment and it’s all ADR approved “
“I had to fit extended bump stops to suit the big shocks as well
as drop out cones and coil retainers. I installed the BOSS rear
tower braces to the coil towers too.”
