WHEN GRAHAM GOT IT
Look at the old girl! Imagine going back and telling
Shorty what it’d get up to over the next 10-12 years!
That right there is a fairly stock GQ SWB. The
beauty about these old trucks is you don’t have to
spend a motza to make them a beast off-road. Let’s
look at what Graham has done to it over the years.
INSANE TRANSFORMATION
- Full body rebuild in 2015
- Millweld front bar
- 33in Bridgestone Dueler MT
- Front and Rear locker
- Moonlight Fabrications airbox and snorkel
- Custom Seats from Huracan Fabrication
- Roll-over repair by Rust Worx
- Tracklander Roof Rack
WHEN JOCK GOT IT
“I bought the HiLux about 7 years ago and it was
absolutely mint”, explains Jock. “It was actually my
first vehicle and I saved my dollars for a few years
working some heinous jobs in order to afford it. I
slowly started doing it up in the shed at home by
myself, usually using second hand parts or saving
money to buy what I could if it was an important
part (e.g. suspension). Then after setting it up as a
tourer, it wasn’t cutting it anymore for what I
wanted to do, so we did the solid axle conversion.
INSANE TRANSFORMATION
- Solid axle swap using an 80 Series housing with
flipped custom radius arms - Double triangulated 4-link rear coil setup on a
KUN26 HiLux housing - King 2.5in remote reservoir shocks and
Dobinson coils - LN106 transfer case with Marlin crawler
competition 4.7 reduction gears - ARB front and rear air lockers
- Custom sliders and front and rear scrub bars
using 1in ¾ tubing - Custom 1400x1800 steel tray
- Modified ARB bullbar to suit a high mount winch
- Warn 8274 winch with drilled and tapped brake
shaft, brace bars, +76mm Gigglepin air freespool
drum, Road Runner Offroad 6.8hp motor and an
Albright solenoid - HPD top mount intercooler
- Custom 3in exhaust
“I (^) absolutely love ho
w the (^) vehicle drives
combination of (^) everything” with the
, explains Jock. “But
pick one thing that stands ou if I (^) had to
t, it would be the redu
gears. They just give me so much ction
control in the tough
and plenty of torque for (^) when (^) I’m dr stuff
iving up massive step
and tough sections. I can keep the vehi s
and don’t h cle^ slow^ and steady
ave to flog it to drive
stuff.”
“We all have that dre
am 4 WD (^) build in min
d, something that (^100)
% fits the type
of (^) wheeling we like t
o do. (^) My (^) GU, I’m stok
ed to (^) say, is my drea
m build. These
days Im all about tou
ring, seeing as much
of (^) the country (^) as (^) I ca
n, (^) including my
personal hobbies int
o the (^) trips and doing
it as remote and as c
omfortable as (^) I
can. My GU ticks al
l the boxes and then s
ome. So again it’s a
tough (^) choice of
just (^) what one modi
fication is my favouri
te as I’ve done (^) so (^) mu
ch (^) to that rig to
make it what (^) it is to
day. However I guess
what really sets it a
part is the extra
cab (^) design. Origina
lly (^) it was a GU (^) coil ca
b ute. The dog (^) box w
as (^) added to (^) give
more cab space and
is (^) all (^) one piece; mea
ning the (^) cab extends
into the (^) dog box.
Adding (^) gullwing (^) doo
rs gives access to m
y fridge and storage
draws plus (^) gives
the (^) cab just bucket
loads more space an
d comfort over the s
tandard coil cab.
This not (^) only sets my
GU apart from the c
ountless others out t
real (^) world useable (^) mod that has chan here but is a
ged the (^) way I go bus
h.”
