Australian 4WD Action – August 2019

(Kiana) #1

  • Cab Chop

  • 300mm Chassis Chop

  • Turbo and intercooled 1HZ

  • ARB Airlockers

The biggest modification to this 80 Series is obviously the cab and
chassis chop, and it was this that attracted Jake to the 80 Series.
“The chop was completed by MHM Customs and was so neat.
MHM also fabricated the neat steel tray. When I saw it, it was
immediately like the best of both worlds. Solid axles and coil
springs all-round in a ute – exactly what I wanted!”
Even under the bonnet, the vehicle is far from stock. The
ever-reliable factory 1HZ has been supplemented with a turbo
and intercooler. “It actually hauls really well with the turbo,” Jake
says. “1HZs aren’t really known for going too hard, but with the
weight reduction and the few engine mods, this thing goes very
well.”
The 80 also came with Airlockers installed front and rear,
however Jake thinks they’re getting a little bit tired. “I’m planning
to upgrade to Elockers when I can.”

CHOP & ENGINE

  • 4in lift with Flexi Coils all round

  • Tough Dog Foam Cell Shocks

  • 16in Kings Kings Modular Steel Rims

  • 315/75R16 BF Goodrich KM3 Mud Terrains

If there’s just one thing that this 80 Series does well (Spoiler:
there’s more than one!), then it’s flex. That’s courtesy of the 4in
suspension lift that was installed before Jake bought the truck.
“It’s running Tough Dog Foam Cell shocks all round, combined
with flexi coils,” Jake says. “Honestly, it rides a bit stiff now that
the vehicle has lost a lot of weight off the rear end. Flexes like an
animal, though!”
Combining with the suspension is a set of 35in BF Goodrich
KM3s on Kings Modular steel rims with a -44 offset. “In the short
time that I’ve owned this 80, I’ve never lifted a wheel,” Jake
laughs. “The KM3s are the best you can get, and when combined
with the suspension, the truck’s like a tractor off-road.”
