Australian 4WD Action – August 2019

(Kiana) #1
Start off by finding a good radiator flush. We used Nulon in this
case and followed the directions on the bottle. For this particular
one, we drained enough water out of the radiator to add the
Nulon radiator flush and put the cap back on. Start it up and turn
the heater on full heat to flush the heater core, too.
Run it for 20 minutes and make sure it’s up to temp and the
thermostat has opened. You can check by carefully feeling both
main radiator hoses – they should be the same temp, and fully
hot. Once the thermostat has opened, turn off the engine and
let it cool down until it’s just warm and drain all the coolant.
With all the coolant drained out, pull the thermostat housing
off along with the thermostat (take note of how the thermostat
was sitting in the housing), using a garden hose and fresh clean
water, reverse flush the excess coolant and crud remaining in
the block and heater core.

Remove the radiator from the engine bay by first disconnecting the
fan shroud then unbolting the supports for the radiator. This will
vary depending on which vehicle you own. For example, on 80 Series
Cruisers its quite a time consuming process, but on a GU Patrol its a
few bolts and the shroud. Take care not to damage the shroud as you
remove it as it’s critical for allowing even air flow to move through
the core of the radiator. We’re also replacing the viscous fan hub too.
Before bolting the clutch fan back it’s a good idea to change the belts
and even the fan belt pulley, whilst everything’s so easily accessible.
Preventive maintenance on simple things like these are piece of mind
out in the scrub, and you can keep the old belts and pulley as a spare
to get you out of trouble. If you’re not replacing your belts or fan/ hub
assembly, while you have access to it all it’s a smart idea to inspect all
the components thoroughly to ensure proper operation.
