NGC 1342, an impressive open
cluster in the constellation Perseus,
contains nearly 100 stars easily seen
against a dim background sky. It
lies at a distance of 1,170 light-years
and spreads over a diameter of 15'.

NGC 772 is a peculiar spiral galaxy in
the constellation Aries the Ram. Also
known as Arp 78, it travels through
space with the small elliptical galaxy
NGC 770, which lies to NGC 772’s
lower right in this image. The larger
galaxy’s oversized spiral arm probably
arose from gravitational interactions
between the two behemoths.

Cederblad 111 is a blue reflection
nebula (plus lots of dark nebulosity)
that lies within a star-forming region
in the far-southern constellation
Chamaeleon. It lies 500 light-years
away, making it one of the closest
locations where stars are being born.

The foreground statue commemorates
the Battle of Salamis in 480 B.C. In
the background is a stack of seven
hundred and seven 30-second
exposures centered on Polaris (Alpha
[α] Ursae Minoris). The light pollution
comes mainly from the city of Perama,
Greece. The photographer spent hours
removing the dozens of trails made by

The photographer captured this image
from a rooftop restaurant at Bhaktapur
Durbar Square in Nepal. He said it felt
great to hear all the sounds and noises
around the square while viewing the
crescent Moon and Venus above this
