Eileen discovers Jan

is a people trafficker!

ii It took bucket-loads of courage
for Eileen to let builder Jan into
her life. So she’s horrified when
she finds him at the nail salon
with Rachel and
Nikolai, and realises
her new fella
is involved in
the people-
trafficking ring.
Eileen has
had an inkling
that he’s hiding
something.
Earlier, when Seb
is beaten up, she
phones Jan to tell him,
and struggles to believe him
when he says he’s in Birmingham.
Her fears are confirmed when she
arrives at the salon to find him
and the gang hastily loading the
fixtures and fittings into a van.
Jan declares that he has never
cared for her, but Eileen has more

to worry about than a broken
heart as a fight then breaks out,
and Nikolai smashes her phone
to stop her calling the police.
Fortunately, the cops arrive
and raid the joint.
Back on the cobbles,
Seb is distraught as he
waves goodbye to
manicurist Alina,
who has been found
a safe house. But
there’s sadness for
Eileen, too, who, once
again, has been let
down by a wrong ’un. Can
she find a way to bounce back?

ii PLUS Gary finds an investor
for Underworld, Robert tries
to persuade Vicky not to leave,
Emma discovers her dad has
cancer, Imran tries to scam
Claudia, and Carla is offered a
job by an old business associate.

Chan starred
as Minn-Erva in
Captain Marvel

George is still in cahoot s with
slave trader Ralph Hanson,
though, isn’t he? Yes, he’s never
going to be perfect. I think it would
be a disservice to him as a character
to strip away his capabilities as a
villain. He’s definitely still villainous,
but there’s more of a sense of him
as a human being this series.

Have things softened between
him and Ross since Elizabeth’s
death? Yes, their priorities have
changed. They’re still pitted against
each other personally and politically,
but the days of fighting in the pub
are behind them. There’s a kind of
maturity to them, although they’re
still capable of childish behaviour.

Will you be sad to say goodbye
to George? Yes, definitely. You
put part of what you own into that
character. I’ve loved playing him, so
it will be sad to leave him behind.
I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet.

C an you tell us what your last
scene is like? I love my last scene
very much – it’s satisfying and
moving and clever. Actually, I think
my last word might be ‘goodbye’.

Have you taken any souvenirs
from the set? Yeah, my pockets
are full! Seriously, George’s stuff
is all so ridiculously extravagant.
A golden marble table in my little
flat? Probably not!

in her shoes. I’ve
never internet-
dated. I know
people who are
in healthy, happy
relationships through
this process. But I’ve also
heard horror stories. You get the
spectrum of that here.

Why does Hannah consider
freezing her eggs? Like many
women, she’s struggling with
the anxiety that comes with
living in a society constantly
reminding women about
their ‘biological clock’. Her
doctor in the film is a real-life
doctor, Dr Ippokratis Sarris,
and he explained everything
to Hannah as if it was a real
consultation. It was very
educational. I was
surprised by some

of the figures and
how [freezing eggs]
is not a fail-safe
insurance policy.

How does making
I Am Hannah compare to
filming blockbusters like Crazy
Rich Asians or Captain Marvel?
They are different experiences.
After making those studio films,
I was craving something a lot
more intimate. We worked with
the bare minimum of crew and
shot it over 10 long, intense days.
What’s great about Dominic’s
I Am trilogy is that you see the
stories from a woman’s point
of view and feel everything as
she’s going through it. If we
can come away from them and
empathise and be less judgmental
of others and ourselves, that’s
a good thing.
