Mother

Three mums, miffed when their grown-up sons don’t
call them on Mother’s Day, decide to do something
about it in Netflix’s new comedy film Otherhood.
The long-time friends – Gillian (Patricia Arquette),
Carol (Angela Bassett) and Helen (Felicity Huffman) –
drive to New York to pay their offspring a surprise visit.
Arquette, 51, who won a Golden Globe for prison
drama Esca p e a t D a n ne m ora and has been nominated for
an Emmy for her portrayal of a mother with Munchausen
syndrome by proxy in The Act, tells us more...

Did Otherhood make a welcome change from
yo u r m o r e r e c e n t r o l e s? I shot Otherhood in
between filming for Esca p e a t D a n ne m ora and The Act,
so it was a refreshing break between two rather heavy
projects. Not only was it really nice to do a comedy,
but I love the way that the movie delves into themes
of motherhood, sisterhood and friendship. It was also
g r e a t t o b e a b l e t o w o r k w i t h a m a z i n g a c t r e s s e s l i ke
Felicity Huffman and Angela Bassett, and to have a
female director and producer.

As a mother yourself, how much did you relate
t o yo u r c h a ra c t e r i n t h e m ov i e? There are a
number of qualities that are similar to me. For example,
whenever I walk into my kids’ space, I definitely end up
starting to clean the place – just like Gillian in Otherhood

  • but my children tend to stop me every time. I guess I
can be an overinvested mum at times, too. But Gillian
goes further than I do. She creates a lot of drama.

The movie’s director Cindy Chupack worked
on Sex and the City. How do the two compare?
There are definitely similarities. First of all, you get to see
a lot of New York City in Otherhood. Plus, the wardrobe
is really fun. And there are themes of sisterhood and
friendship, which are themes you see in Sex and the City.

You don’t seem to be short of exciting roles at
the moment... At 51, i t ’s p r e t t y c ra z y t o b e g e t t i n g
these character parts and being able to play complicated
people. I’m lucky I’m at this age at a time where plenty
of people are trying to make a lot of content for a lot of
c h a n n e l s. I t ’s a g o o d t i m e t o b e i n o u r i n d u s t r y.

Oscar-winning actress Geena
Davis joins the cast of Netflix’s
1980s-set women’s wrestling
comedy GLOW for its third season.
Following the axing of their TV
series in LA, the Gorgeous Ladies

of Wrestling have moved to Las
Vegas and are gearing up for
several live shows at the Fan-Tan
Hotel and Casino. Thelma & Louise
star Davis plays the venue’s
entertainment director, the
glam Sandy Devereaux St Clair.
‘Having her on set was amazing,’
says Kate Nash, AKA Rhonda
‘Britannica’ Richardson.
‘We’d sit together and
she’d be learning
how to flip a card
or roll dice!’

For Alison Brie, who plays Ruth
Wilder, AKA Zoya the Destroyer,
having the gang in Sin City marks
a real departure for the show.
‘It looks different, it looks more
luxe, it looks more expensive. It’s
a little more dangerous,’ she says.
But with the new environment
comes fresh challenges. ‘All the
characters are trying on different
versions of themselves,’ adds Brie.
‘And they are all embracing
the themes of Las Vegas –
you know, Sin City and what
happens in Vegas stays
in Vegas! It feels a
bit like there are
no rules.’
