Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card Shootout

With the rapid improvement of the photography industry, associated industries
like the data storage sector, newer products keep hitting the market with improved
performances. Card manufacturers are looking beyond 128 GB cards, which, by today’s
standard have become normal. Most mobile phones these days feature more storage
than that and considering RAW images from DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras can be
quite heavy in terms of size, 256 GB and above seems like the way forward. This year
we have taken into account all of that and have performed our extensive tests on the
two contenders, SanDisk and Kingston in the 256 GB SD card category to see who
emerges as the winner.

Contenders

  • SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS- I 256GB Card

  • Kingston Canvas React SDXC V30 A1 256GB Card

Parameters
We have taken the following things into
consideration while reviewing the cards:

  • Crystal Disk Mark 3.0.

  • Folder Test

  • In Camera performance

A

s we do every year, we asked each company to send
their best 256GB secure digital card. SanDisk sent the
SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS- I 256GB card which
promises a transfer speed of up to 170 Mb/s (read speed) and
up to 90 Mb/s (write speed) and is priced at Rs. 13,450* (MRP).
Kingston sent the Kingston Canvas React SDXC V30 A1 256GB
card which claims to have a read speed of 100 MB/s which is
priced at Rs. 12,999* (MRP).
Class 10 UHS-I/II/III are some of the fastest SD cards
available in the market currently and handles the highest quality
standard definition in stills and video recording. For today’s full
HD or 4K shooting as well as higher megapixel RAW shooting
mirrorless and DSLRs, Class 10 cards seem to be the way
forward for photographers and videographers alike.

The benchmark tests
We have been known to follow the industry very closely
and have always innovated and modified our tests according
to the industry’s improvements and standards while keeping in
mind a photographer’s needs. This year we have three tests to
determine the winner of the category - Crystal Disk Mark test,
Folder Transfer test and In-camera test.

Crystal Disk Mark 3.0.
The first card we tested was the SanDisk, which clocked
90.18 Mb/s read speed and a 71.25 Mb/s write speed. Kingston
recorded a read speed of 90.34 Mb/s and write speed of 76.
Mb/s.
