habitat that you are working in. This
even involves not coming in the way of
subjects’ movements, behaviours etc
specially with macro photography of
nature, usually with smaller creatures.
We, most often than not, have to handle
the animal and set it up in a place where
it is easy to photograph. I try to avoid
that as much as possible, but when I do,
I take utmost precaution to make sure I
handle it carefully. The second biggest
issue is the use of lights. Because the
depth of field is so shallow, we have to
use flashes to shoot and many a times a
lot of these animals are found only in the
night. The heat and light can do serious
damage to many animals. So we really
have to be careful with that.

Do you think post-processing will play
a major part in macro photography
in the future with Instagram and
other social media portals giving
photographers the pleasure of instant
gratification when they post heavily
edited images?

I personally find this trend disturbing.
The heavy use of filters on Instagram
makes the image look unreal. I am fine
with it if the photographer calls himself
an artist and not a photographer. We
as nature photographers try our best

to depict nature the way it is. But like
all things I see this as a passing phase.
If Instagram shuts down tomorrow,
then that’s the end for many of these
photographers who are nothing but
instant Instagram stars.
