Lens hood and ND filters
Lens hoods are circular attachments that can be used on the lens to prevent flare from the sun. ND filters
are specialised filters that have different uses as well. These accessories are not often necessary for day to
day use, but using them (or not using them) correctly can give you great results. Sometimes when shooting
portraits, one might look for lens flare. Take off that lens hood and use the flare to your advantage. Sometimes
in concert photography, where the lights are constantly changing direction, intensity and colour, a lens hood
might just be the thing you need! An ND filter has it’s own set of uses but that is for another article entirely.
Check them out at your local store and see how you can incorporate them in your style of photography.

Eyes make a
photograph

Remember the famous shot of the
‘Afgan Girl’ by Steve Mccurry? What
made it so interesting? Why do so many
people from around the world revere that
photo so much? Well, it is all in the eyes.
Eyes take a portrait photo to a whole
new level. Look for interesting faces
with eye colours that pop. Green or blue
eyes are not as common as brown and
black eyes. Leaving aside the colour,
the gaze also makes a difference. If you
find eyes that are showing emotion, the
photograph will tend to convey that
emotion to the viewer. So next time you
take a street portrait, pay extra attention
to the eyes.
