Andean Condors are
magnificent birds and
with so few numbers left in the
wild it was a real pleasure to
get close to one. Our bird
handler, Adam, set up a tree stump and a trestle
table and encouraged ‘Pooky’ to fly between
the two so we could get some shots of her flying
towards us with the wings fully spread out.
I actually had to shoot quite wide here, because
her 9ft wingspan made it tricky to fit in the
frame. The room we were in has a specially made
white backdrop to make it easy to get a clean,
portraits of the birds. My 1/250 sec was fast
enough here for sharp shots.

check your shots


one of the biggest advantages of modern digital
cameras is their rear LCD screen. Whenever you
take a picture it’s a good idea to review the image
with the Playback button and zoom in on your focal
point, like the eyes of the condor in this shot, to
make sure it’s absolutely pin-sharp.
