Red kite

SayS... I have been working over a
few days to get some trust from a
local nesting pair of Red Kites. I’ve
been putting out some raw chicken
wings, which seems to be a favourite
of theirs, they have either one or two
youngsters they are feeding, and
appreciate the extra free food. They get
extra food, I get pictures, fair trade.
I used my EOS 80D with a Sigma
150-600mm Sports lens. In post I’ve
cropped in a bit to make the bird a little
larger and position it more centrally
within the frame.

Brian SayS... I think you’ll be
spending a lot more time taking
photos of these Red Kites. One of the
most obvious criticisms is the clipped
feathers at the top of the frame,
zooming out a little will give you more
wing-tip room in frame. The light on the
bird is great, with a good catchlight in
the eye – the wing position is good too.

Focus is sharpest on the fence post,
but not quite as sharp on the birds
head. I’d stop the lens down a little
more to give deeper depth of field. Also
if you pre-focus on the post, manually

shift focus slightly in-front of
the post. With the birds getting used to
you now, keep on taking photographs of
these majestic raptors and improving
your results.

Brian SayS... You need to connect the
camera to a computer and use Canon’s
EOS Utility software to load a custom
Picture Style. You can either create your
own styles with the Picture Style editor
software, or download Picture Style files
from the internet, including Canon in
Japan via quick link bit.ly/pp155style.

Your EOS 7D Mark II requires the .pf2
format Picture Style files. When you
create a Picture Style it’s based on the
pre-set styles originally supported by
your camera and it’s Raw files. If
you start with an EOS 7D Mark II
image it doesn’t offer Fine Detail
as a starting style. (Also see page 80.)

01 Get connected
Connect the camera to your computer
and start EOS Utility, then from the
main window choose camera settings.
This lets you configure settings and
install Picture Styles.

02 Install custom styles
Click on the Register Picture Styles link
and a dialog box appears, prompting
you to select the Picture Style file to
install in one of the camera’s three
custom styles.

Creating your unique Picture Styles
needs a suitable stating Raw. This
defines the base styles available.
Here an EOS 5D Mark III image doesn’t
allow Fine Detail style to be used.

How do you put a Picture
Style in to a camera, and

can you add the Fine Detail
style to EOS 7D Mark II?
