CHAPTER 2: Configuring Your Android App Development System 43

In addition to the seven buttons on the right, there is a second tab at the top of this dialog that will
access some preloaded device definitions that come with Eclipse ADT. We will take a look at these
next, when we actually create an AVD for our use during this book.

There are two ways to create an AVD in Eclipse ADT, one is to select a “pre-configured” AVD device
definition, and the other is to create your AVD “from scratch.” We will do both in this chapter, so that
you have a complete and thorough overview of exactly what functionality this AVD Manager offers.

Pre-configured (pre-defined) Android device definitions are accessed using the Device Definitions
tab, shown as the right-hand tab at the top of Figure 2-12, which when clicked will display the
currently defined device definitions. If you define your own AHD, which we will be doing soon, it
will also be listed here along with the pre-defined AHD definitions that are provided with Eclipse by
default. After I show you how to create a Nexus One AVD emulator using one of these existing AHD
definitions, I’ll then show you how to define your own custom AHD emulation specification from
scratch, by using the New Device button, shown at the top-right of Figure 2-13.
