CUT FABRICS
Cut pieces in the following order.
Patterns are on Pattern Sheet 2. To
make templates of patterns, see Make
and Use Templates, page 108.
To speed the cutting process,
designer Kristin Esser rotary-cut the
pattern pieces using EZ Quilting Tri-
Recs acrylic tools (feedsacklady.com).
If you’re using these tools, refer to the
manufacturer’s instructions for cutting
triangles.
From solid off-white, cut:
▫ 24—2×21" strips
▫ 48—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 120—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
▫ 96 each of patterns A and
A reversed
From assorted dark blue prints, cut:
▫ 48—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares (24 matched
pairs)
▫ 96 of Pattern B
From assorted light blue prints, cut:
▫ 24—2× 21" strips
From assorted medium blue prints,
cut:
▫ 24—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From indigo print No. 1, cut:
▫ 7—2×42" strips for border
From indigo print No. 2, cut:
▫ 7—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips
ASSEMBLE BLOCK A
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.
- Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line
on wrong side of each solid off-white
3 7 ⁄ 8 " square. - Layer a marked solid off-white
square atop a dark blue print 3^7 ⁄ 8 "
square. Sew together with two seams,
stitching^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side of marked
line (Diagram 1). Cut pair apart on
drawn line; press open to make two
triangle-squares. Each triangle-square
should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make
96 triangle-squares total. - Sew together a solid off-white
2 × 21" strip and a light blue print 2× 21"
strip to make a strip set (Diagram 2).
Repeat to make 24 strip sets total.
Cut each strip set into four 3^1 ⁄ 2 "-wide
segments for 96 segments total. - Gather four matching triangle-
squares, four matching 3^1 ⁄ 2 ”-wide
segments, and a medium blue print
3 1 ⁄ 2 " square.
FINISHED QUILT: 57^1 ⁄ 2 × 75 1 ⁄ 2 "
FINISHED BLOCKS: 9" square

It is the Japanese tradition of creating textiles through layering and repeated
intentional mending. Originally the mending was done as a way to extend the
life of tattered garments using indigo scraps for the patches. Recently it has
had a resurgence as a method of adding texture and design.
