American Patchwork & Quilting - USA (2019-12)

(Antfer) #1

  1. Referring to Diagram 2, place
a thin line of glue along a template
edge, fold fabric seam allowance over
template edge, and press. Repeat with
remaining edges to make a basted
A hexagon (Diagram 3). Do not
    remove paper template.

  2. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with
    remaining tone-on-tone 3" squares to
make seven basted A hexagons total.

  3. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with B triangle
templates to make six gray basted
B triangles (Diagram 4) and six light
    gray basted B triangles.

  4. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with
    C rectangle templates (Diagram 5)
to make six light gray basted
    C rectangles.
    8. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with
D hexagon template to make one light
    gray basted D hexagon.

ASSEMBLE PINCUSHION
In English paper piecing, the
quiltmaker decides the order of
construction because paper templates
stabilize the fabric, making it possible
to work in any direction.

  1. Referring to Diagram 6, place a
gray basted B triangle atop dark gray
basted A hexagon with right sides
    together. Hold pieces together with
your hand or a small clip.

  2. Thread hand-sewing needle with
neutral sewing thread. At one corner,
    begin whipstitching using tiny stitches
and catching a few threads of both
fabric folds on back of templates. You
will feel the papers with your needle,
but do not stitch through them.
    Backstitch to secure seam. Whipstitch
    to the opposite corner; backstitch.
    Finger-press joined pieces open.

  3. Referring to red arrows on Sewing
Guide Diagram, in the same manner
add remaining gray basted B triangles
to remaining edges of Step 2 dark gray
    basted A hexagon (Diagram 7).
    4. Referring to Diagram 8 and black
    arrows on Sewing Guide Diagram,
    add remaining basted A hexagons
to Step 3 unit, setting in seams as
necessary. To set in a piece, sew seam
on one side, reposition stitched pieces
so next seam is aligned, and continue
    sewing.
    5. Referring to Diagram 9 and blue
    arrows on Sewing Guide Diagram,
add light gray basted B triangles to
Step 4 unit to make pincushion top.
