  1. Using red floss, featherstitch
    embellishment on L hat trim.
    For featherstitch instructions and
    diagram, see Assemble Snowman
    Ornament, Step 3, page 53.

  2. Using green floss, fern-stitch
    and straight-stitch three greenery
    branches on I beard. For each branch,
    make three sets of fern stitches
    followed by two straight stitches.
    To fern-stitch, bring needle up at
    A (Fern Stitch Diagram) and push it
    down at B. Bring needle up at C and
    push it down again at A. Pull needle up
    at D and push it down at A to complete
    one fern-stitch set. Bring needle up at
    E and push it down at F to begin next
    set of fern stitches.

  3. Using red floss, add a French knot
    at the end of each greenery branch.
    To make a French knot, bring
    needle up at A, the point where knot
    is desired (French Knot Diagram).
    Wrap floss around needle twice. Insert
    tip of needle into fabric at B,^1 ∕ 16 " away
    from A. Gently push wraps down
    needle to meet fabric. Pull needle and
    trailing floss through fabric slowly and
    smoothly.
    6. Using gray floss, make a straight
    stitch for each eyebrow on H face.
    7. Using floss that matches the
    buttons, add^3 ∕ 16 "-diameter black
    buttons for eyes,^1 ∕ 4 "-diameter
    red button for nose, and^3 ∕ 8 "-diameter
    cream button at tip of hat.
    8. Using an 8"-long piece of black-
    and-white twine, take a stitch in hat.
    Tie twine ends in a knot to make a
    hanging loop and complete Santa
    ornament.


ASSEMBLE SLEIGH ORNAMENT
Use two strands of embroidery floss
for all embroidery stitches. Refer to
Photo C, page 52, for placement of
embroidery stitches and buttons.


  1. Referring to Sleigh Appliqué
    Placement Diagram, on red wool felt
    C background piece arrange appliqué
    pieces M–R. Fuse pieces in place
    following manufacturer’s instructions.
    2. Using floss in colors that match
    appliqués, blanket-stitch edges of
    M runner, N sleigh and Q tree. Using
    green floss, blanket-stitch edges of
    O and P leaves. Using cream floss,
    blanket-stitch edges of R sleigh trim.

    3. Using cream floss, make a single
    long straight stitch in center of O and
    P leaves for vein lines.
    For straight-stitch instructions and

    4. Using red-and-white twine, make
    three long straight stitches in a zigzag
    pattern on Q tree for garland.
    5. Using cream floss, add^3 ∕ 16 "-diameter
    cream buttons to tree for ornaments
    and^1 ∕ 4 "-diameter cream button at O
    and P leaves on sleigh.
    6. Using an 8"-long piece of black-
    and-white twine, take a stitch in tree.
    Tie twine ends in a knot to make a
    hanging loop and complete sleigh
    ornament.
