LETTER FROM THE

E tor

ather your sewing and
quilting supplies—it’s
time to make holiday projects!
I enjoy the process of making
and giving gifts—probably
even more than receiving
them. However, I’m a bit of a
procrastinator, so sometimes
need projects that can be done
in an evening or weekend. If
that’s your situation, check out
the color options in this issue.
Many are smaller objects that
can be made in a short period
of time.
Another quick project is the
featured pincushion, Color
Coordinated on page 24, which
I patterned after a similar
design in a vintage quilt. I
often make test blocks before
embarking on a larger project
and, in this case, I turned the
test block into a pincushion. I
used English paper piecing to
assemble it. You could skip the
paper templates and instead
make templates of the pattern
pieces (found on Pattern

Sheet 2), add a consistent
seam allowance to all edges,
and hand-piece it. I used nine
fabrics in my project, which
has a modern vibe. The color
option, which has a traditional
look, used just three.
Besides making gifts, how do
you celebrate the holidays? Do
you decorate, bake, watch all
the Hallmark movies, or travel
to a special place? ’Tis the
Season, page 21, takes a look
at this time of year through
the eyes of quiltmakers. We
polled our Facebook group to
get advice for finding sewing
time during the busy days of
December and pulled some
projects from our archives that
would make great gifts.

tradition? Send me a note at

love to hear from our readers!

My favorite o a

ra o is singing
“Silent Night” during
the close of a candlelit
Christmas Eve service.

Our Advent calendar.
I tuck a note with a diff erent
family activity, like writing
Christmas cards or making
ornaments, into each day.
Occasionally the note
mentions a hidden gift, and
the kids use clues to fi nd it.
We rotate daily as to who
gets to pick out the note.

Making fudge as a family.
The fudge is a great gift for
coaches, music teachers,
scout leaders, family, and
friends.

Our family hymn sing.
We light candles, and
everyone—from youngest
to oldest—gets to pick a
favorite hymn, which we all
sing. At the end, we blow
out the candles and enjoy
stollen and hot chocolate.
