ASSEMBLE CORNER UNITS


Measurements include^1 ∕ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.


  1. Top a mottled light gray A piece
    with a mottled dark gray B piece
    (Diagram 1). Align center matching
    points; pin. Pin matching points at
    each end. Pin generously in between,
    gently easing edges as needed to align
    (Diagram 2).

  2. Sew together pieces, removing each
    pin just before the needle reaches it, to
    make a corner unit (Diagram 3). The
    unit should be 4^1 ∕ 2 " square including
    seam allowances. Repeat to make 16
    corner units total.
    3. Using mottled light gray B pieces
    and mottled dark gray A pieces, repeat
    steps 1 and 2 to make 16 reversed
    corner units (Diagram 4).
    4. Combining remaining mottled
    light gray A and B pieces with A and
    B pieces in remaining colors, repeat
    steps 1-3 to make 112 corner units total
    and 112 reversed corner units total.


ASSEMBLE POINT UNITS
1. Referring to Diagram 5, sew
together a mottled teal C triangle
and a mottled beige D triangle. Add
a mottled teal C reversed triangle to
make a point unit. The unit should be
21 ∕ 2 × 41 ∕ 2 " including seam allowances.


  1. Using remaining C, C reversed, and
    D triangles, repeat Step 1 to make 224
    point units total.


ASSEMBLE CENTER UNITS


  1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line
    on wrong side of each mottled light
    gray 1^1 ∕ 2 " square.

  2. Align a marked mottled light
    gray square with one corner of a
    mottled teal 2^1 ∕ 2 " square (Diagram 6;
    note direction of marked line). Sew
    on marked line. Trim excess fabric,
    leaving a^1 ∕ 4 " seam allowance. Press


open attached triangle. Add a second
marked mottled light gray square
to opposite corner; trim and press
as before. In the same manner, add
marked mottled light gray squares to
remaining corners to make a center
unit. The unit should be 2^1 ∕ 2 " square
including seam allowances.


  1. Using remaining 2^1 ∕ 2 " squares,
    repeat Step 2 to make 56 center units
    total.


ASSEMBLE BLOCKS


  1. Gather two dark gray corner units,
    two dark gray reversed corner units,
    one teal center unit, and four teal point
    units.

  2. Referring to Diagram 7, lay out
    units in three rows. Sew together units
    in rows. Join rows to make a block. The
    block should be 10^1 ∕ 2 " square including
    seam allowances.

  3. Referring to Quilt Assembly
    Diagram for color pairings, repeat
    steps 1 and 2 to make 56 blocks total.
