Newsweek’s Best Nursing Homes
2 020 recognizes just over 400 of
the best nursing homes across 20
states: California, Texas, Florida,
New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois,
Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Mich-
igan, New Jersey, Virginia, Wash-
ington, Arizona, Massachusetts,
Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, Mary-
land, Wisconsin. The states were
selected based on population size.
We included single branches of
nursing homes (e. g. Okeechobee
Health Care Facility), not
nursing home groups or chains.
Nursing homes had to have a
capacity of at least 150 certi-
fied beds to be considered.
For every nursing home that
was part of the analysis a score
was calculated. The score is based
on two data sources: 1. Recom-
mendations from medical experts
(nurses, administrators, therapists
and physicians). 2. Nursing Home
performance based on CMS data in
three domains (health inspections,
staffing, and quality measures).
The overall rating is calculated
by combining the reputation survey
score (15%) and the performance
data score (85%). The ranking
of nursing home domains by
survey participants was used to
determine the weights for creating
the performance data score.
The number of nursing homes
awarded in each state varies by
the number of nursing homes that
achieved the threshold score. The
state of New York had the most
nursing homes awarded with
63, while Missouri is represent-
ed with 3 nursing homes.
In order to be awarded as a best
nursing home, a threshold of 5 out
of 10 possible points had to be
achieved in all three-performance
based sub-dimensions (health
inspections, staffing and quality
measures). A total of 406 facilities
have achieved the required number
of points and fulfil the eligibility
criteria. All eligible nursing homes
have been assigned a rank that
shows performance within a state.
