Llamas hum to communicate. If you hear a long,

high-pitched hum, back away! The llama isn’t

humming because it’s in a good mood—it’s upset.

And unhappy llamas spit. They will spit at each

other, and they’ll even spit at humans too. Their

spit smells horrible—you definitely don’t want to

be hit with it!

A llama’s spit is foul smelling because they are ruminant

animals, which means they have a four-compartment

stomach to digest their food. The food ferments, or

goes through a chemical change, then the llama vomits

and chews the food again.
