It’s a good thing sloths don’t have to go to school—
they’d never make it on time! These drowsy tree
dwellers move very, very slowly. When awake,
they only travel an average of 9 feet (3 meters)
per minute. In fact, they are so incredibly slow
that green algae, which are plant-like organisms,
actually grow on their fur.

More About Sloths
Sloths live in the jungles of Central and South America
and spend most of their time hanging from tree
branches. The green algae in their fur help hide them
from predators. The algae, along with the insects that live
in their fur, also provide tasty snacks.
