The lyrebird is one of the best-known birds in Australia.
The males have large, beautiful tails that they fan out
during mating season. They can live up to 30 years, and
have existed for at least 15 million years.
You’re in the middle of the Australian woods, miles
from civilization, when you suddenly hear a baby
crying his head off. Huh?! Don’t be fooled! It may just
be a lyrebird. This bird is an expert at reproducing
sounds it has heard before. It can perfectly mimic a
koala, a car alarm, a chainsaw, or even a crying baby.
It’s hard to tell the difference between the imitations
and the real sounds.
