Naked mole rats aren’t naked, although they have very
little hair. They aren’t moles or rats either. They are,
however, funny-looking rodents that live almost their
entire lives underground, running back and forth through
mazes of tight underground tunnels. And they are the
only mammals that can run just as quickly backward or
forward—without having to turn around!
More About Naked Mole Rats
These tiny critters live in the deserts of East Africa.
They have pink, wrinkly skin and thin ratlike tails. Their
tube-shaped bodies are almost hairless. Naked mole
rats are closely related to porcupines, chinchillas, and
guinea pigs.
