push-ups! Male lizards bask in the hot sun soaking up the
rays. But as soon as a female lizard comes strolling by, the
male goes into action. It raises its body up off the ground
over and over again in push-up style. This displays his
colorful underbelly, which attracts the female.

The underbelly and throat of the western sagebrush
lizard have a striking, shiny blue patch separated by
a white stripe. The male lizard waits until a female
comes within a 4-inch (10-centimeter) distance before
“exercising” so the female will notice his bright
colors better.
