Philips Hue Starter Kit
+++++from £59 (white) / meethue.com
Become an indoor god with the smartest
way of lighting up your home remotely.

Parrot Bebop 2
++++,£440 / parrot.com
The price is right, but camera quality and
connection troubles hold this Parrot back.

Amazon Echo Dot
+++++£50 / amazon.co.uk
Shame about the poor-quality speaker, but
the Dot is a better buy than the full-size Echo.

Yuneec Breeze 4K
++++,£449 / yuneec.com
No aerial acrobat, this drone is more
concerned with simplicity. And selfies.

Nest 3.0
£249 with installation / nest.com

The Nest 3.0 is not a dramatic reinvention, but it didn’t need
to be: this is still the best-looking and most rewarding smart
thermostat on the market. Impressively, and slightly scarily,
Nest learns your habits – when you’re in the house, when
you’re likely to need a lot of hot water and so on – so it can
control the boiler to save energy and keep that shower nice
and toasty. That, paired with a nicely designed app, is enough
to put the third-gen Nest ahead of its competition.

DJI Mavic Pro
£950 / dji.com

Despite the tiny proportions, DJI hasn’t needed to make any
sacrifices when creating the Mavic Pro. In fact, it’s got more
tech packed inside it than the Phantom 4 – and the foldable
arms and compact controller add to its portability. While this
is an expensive drone, it will fulfil the needs of most enthusiasts
with enough manoeuvrability for racing, enough camera quality
to take fantastic photos and videos, and enough simplicity for
even the most inexperienced pilots.

Netatmo Welcome
£159 / netatmo.com
Netatmo’s smartcam has face recognition
capability, which works well once it’s got to
know you, and the usual motion and noise
detection is easy to control. We like the way
individual profiles can be adjusted.

DJI Phantom 4
£1099 / dji.com
The autonomous modes make this a fine
choice for anyone looking to make their first
flight as a drone pilot. That doesn’t mean
it’s solely for beginners, though – pros will
appreciate the extra tech too.

Hive Active Heatin
2
£249 with installation / hivehome.com
Hive is simple enough for anyone to use and
powerful enough to be truly useful, with
features such as geolocation and holiday
mode. For a family-friendly introduction
to the smart home, it’s a solid choice.

Yuneec Typhoon H
+++++£999 / yuneec.com
The Typhoon H is a fantastic hexacopter
that nails nearly everything: it’s easy to
fly, has a lengthy flight time, takes great
footage and folds up to a fairly portable size.
Pity it takes two whole hours to charge.
