If you woke up in an abandoned
asylum with a VR headset
strapped to your face and no
memory, you’d probably wonder
why you let yourself get talked
into those tequilas. But that’s
exactly what happens to Cole
Black – a man with a murky
military past who sounds exactly
like Sean Bean but isn’t.
With your vision hijacked by
the headset, instructions from
a mystery source are delivered
through various devices, such as
TV screens and a pocket scanner
that looks like a smartphone. It’s
a nifty bit of kit that works as an

evidence scanner, a UV torch and
a map. Taking notes, Samsung?
The thing is, though, you’re
never quite sure what’s real.
The locations are all based
on real places that have been
3D-scanned into the game, but
as parts of the world begin to
warp and disappear, or you go
through door after door after
door at accelerating pace before
waking up somewhere entirely
different, you’ll wonder whether
you’re out of the illusion or just
entering another one.
If it all sounds bit ‘Derren Brown
meets Saw’, that’s because Get

Even’s writers have penned a
host of shows for the illusionist
in the past.
Almost every action feels like
it has a weight. Do you creep past
guards or kill them? Shoot them
or stab them to save bullets?
Release prisoners or let them
stay locked up? Different
decisions will uncover different
evidence in your quest to repair
Black’s memories, but you’ll often
wonder whether you’ve made
the right one.
This game delivers unrelenting
back-of-the-neck prickles that
won’t go away in a hurry.
